Abstract

Thirteen cases of ipsilateral fractures of the femur and tibia were treated. they were classified according to Fraser's classification into type I (8 cases), IIa (3 cases), IIb (1 case), IIc (1 case). Using the criteria for assessment described by Karlstrom, cases were graded as excellent, good, acceptable and poor. Excellent results were achieved en 8 cases, good in one, acceptable in three and poor in one. Cases with injury of the knee joint achieved relatively poor results. We concluded that repair of the knee joint is the most important factor for successful treatment of ipsilateral fractures of the femur and tibia.
