Abstract
The skin surface configuration mainly consists of two different types of morphological structures including wrinkles and skin texture. While skin furrows and fingerprints exist congenitally, wrinkles become remarkable with aging and a history of UV irradiation. We herein describe the noninvasive quantitative methods, mainly developed by ourselves, for evaluating skin surface contour. The morphological changes caused by aging and sunlight exposure were analyzed, and we made a hypothesis regarding the formation mechanisms of the skin surface configuration based on the influence of both anatomical and physiological factors.
