Abstract

Recently, we developed program of sound propagation in ocean water using the parabolic equation (PE) method based on wave theory. This method accurately analyzed long-range sound propagation in deep water. The purpose of this study was to verify the usability of the program for sound propagation based on the PE method. First, we calculated a pulse waveform propagated in the Pacific Ocean with Munk's sound velocity profile using the PE method and ray theory. As a result, the arrival times of pulses estimated by the PE method were in good agreement with the results ray theory. Next, we estimated a pulse waveform propagated in the Central Pacific Ocean. In order to check the accuracy of the program involving the PE method, we compared the pulse waveform derived using estimation data with that derived using experimental data obtained in the Central Pacific Ocean Tomography Experiment (CEPTE2000). CEPTE2000 was carried out in the Central Pacific Ocean by JAMSTEC from 1999 to 2000. As a result, the arrival times of the pulses estimated by the PE method were in good agreement with the results of the measured pulse waveform. It is clear that the program of sound propagation based on the PE method is a usable method of analysis of sound propagation in deep water.
