Abstract

To investigate local lesions following Habu snake bites, we studied intramuscular lesions in 16 rabbits after injection of Habu venom.Habu venom was injected into the right tibialis anterior (TA) muscle at a dose of 0.4mg, 1mg, 2mg, 4mg, or 6mg per 0.05ml of normal saline. The left TA muscle was injected with an equal volume of nomoal saline and used as the internal control. The muscles of the anterior compartment of both hind limbs were harvested one month later and their weight and histology were examined.TA muscle weight decreased as the venom dose increased. However, very little change was observed in other muscles in the anterior compartment. Histological examination revealed fibrous changes and severe atrophy at the site of injection in the TA muscle. We concluded that Habu venom may only cause damage at the injection site in the muscle and the perimysium may act as a barrier against Habu venom.
