Abstract

This paper investigated the causes contributing to disability following treatment of calcaneal fractures. We studied 33 patients (39 foot fractures) treated at Tokyo Rosai Hospital between 1987 and 1992. Subjects were grouped according to Arnesen's classification into five extraarticular and 34 intraarticular lesions.Cases with a width of more than 3mm on the vertical view complained of disability. In addition, 26 cases insured under the Workmans Accident Compensation scheme complained of more disability and needed a long period of treatment compared with others who did not have this insurance.Three of these 26 cases had severe pain and complete disability requiring a change of work.We corrected the fracture as soon as possible after injury putting tension on Bohler's angle and correcting the deformity in width seen on the vertical view.
