Abstract

Biting midges were collected by light traps at a cowshed on the flat plateau in Nishinasuno and at a montane pasture in Shiobara, Tochigi Prefecture, during a grazing season, April to October. 17 species of Culicoides were confirmed to occur at the areas surveyed, of which 9 species occurred at the former area and 13 at the latter. Among these species, the 4 species, C. sinanoensis, C. maculatus, C. sanguisuga and C. matsuzawai, were predominant. The faunal composition consists of more northern elements than that of the central part of Kanto District. High engorged rates of C. matsuzawai and C. ohmorii suggest a preference for cattle in blood sucking, in addition to Culicoides species that had been reported to prefer it.
