Abstract

The expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) was studied immunohistochemically in 33 head and neck squamous cell carcinomas in relation to the degree of malignancy. The results obtained were as follows:1. EGF immunoreactivity significantly correlated with tumor size and lymph node metastasis.2. EGF immunoreactivity significantly correlated with histological malignancy according to Anneroth's classification, especially in regard to the degree of nuclear polymorphism and mode of invasion.3. The 3 year-cumulative survival rates in low-, moderate-, and high-EGF positive immunoreactivity groups were 100.0, 75.0 and 10.0%, respectively, with a significant decrease in the survival rate being noted (P<0.01, P<0.05) for higher degrees of EGF positive immunoreactivity.
