Abstract

To know precisely the transient motion in a harbor maneuver, it is important not only to estimate individually the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass forces etc. acting on ships but also to reflect the influence of water depth and of ship type on the coefficients to maneuvering simulator conveniently. In the previous paper, it has been demonstrated that a potential flow calculation method is available to estimate the added mass coefficients. The present work gives simplified formulas for the ratio of the added mass and moment of inertia in shallow water to in deep water at the base of the results of some series calculations. The simplified formulas are represented as follows. K_x (Surge), K_y (Sway), K_<zz> (Yaw)=1+α {exp^<(β*d/H)>-1} Coefficients of α and β change according to the mode of ship motion and ship form coefficients such as draft-breadth ratio, the block coefficients, etc. In order to obtain the added mass etc. from the above formulas practically, authors also suggest the formulas for each coefficient of Surge, Sway and Yaw in deep water. The predicted results using the simplified formulas show good agreement with the computational results and experimental results.
