Abstract

The present study was conducted to examine the parameters involved in learning how to speak again after the insertion of an experimental palatal full plate. The study included nine words that have the/sa/sound at the beginning of words and that havea partially common phonemic composition with different numbers of total syllables. Five subjectspracticed utterance 13 times after the insertion of the plate. The utterance duration measured fromsound samples on a sonagram were used as the data base. Change aspect of utterance duration wasobserved after numerous utterances. The results of the study suggest the possibility that the progress of learning tospeak after theinsertion of the plate can be determined by measuring the duration of the sound /sa/ at the beginningof words.
