Abstract

Ba ferrite films with excellent c-axis orientation were deposited on Au(111) and Pt(111) underlayers at substrate temperatures Ts higher than 500°C. C-axis orientation was also achieved by depositing the films at Ts in the range from 300°C to 400°C and then annealing in air. The specimen films exhibited low perpendicular coercivity in the range from 0.5 to 0.8 kOe.The surface of as-deposited BaM/Au film looked rough, and the in-plane coercivity Hc// was high. For as-deposited BaM/Pt film, the average center-line roughness Ra was as small as about 1.7 nm, and the perpendicular and in-plane coercivity were 2.5 kOe and 0.3 kOe, respectively. These results suggested that it might be possible to use BaM/Pt for a perpendicular magnetic recording layers.
