Abstract
Modern automobiles use many permanent magnets in various electromagnetic components for comfort, safety, and fuel economy. Recently, the use of rare-earth magnets has increased dramatically, because of their use in motors for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). HEVs employ permanent-magnet synchronous motors because for higher efficiency. One traction motor of a HEV requires a few kilograms of high-performance NdFeB sintered magnets. This paper describes mainly the current status and future-trends of permanent magnets in automotive applications.
