Abstract

Drilling of large diameter holes on 5056-F which grows a vigorous built-up edge and on 2024-T4 which grows a small built-up edge was simulated by 10mmφ drilling at extrcmely slow revolution. The drilled surface was evaluated in the viewpoints of the built-up edge, chip flow angle and side flow of chip. The nose type built-up edge in drilling 5056-F greatly affects on the drilled surface in falling off and has large over cut in drill margin parts. The drilled surface of 5056-F is inferior in accuracy to that of 2024-T4 which grows a plate type built-up edge. The drilled surface is also inferior to that of 2024-T4 in chip flow angle, side flow and scratch. The growth of built-up edge is restrained, the chip flow angle is minimized and the side flow of chips hardly occurs in extremely slow wet drilling.
