Abstract
We report on the development and application of a measurement system for investigating the electrophoretic mobility of nano-sized particles towards evaluating their dispersion stabilities in colloidal solutions. The measurement principle is based on laser-Doppler technique using a pair of evanescent waves generated at a solid-liquid interface by total internal reflections. The very small penetration depth of evanescent waves in the order of hundred nanometers has an advantage of realizing a high spatial resolution in the detection perpendicular to the interface and may enable the measurement for highly dense suspensions. We designed and built a prototype measurement system. A probe consisting of a half-ball lens and a rod lens was developed for precise detection of the location of total internal reflection where evanescent waves were generated. We confirmed the emergence of evanescent waves at the interface and obtained the scattering signals from the measurement volume. We report experimental results and measurement attempts.
