Abstract

Soft solders which are mainly composed of tin and lead are widely used for the construction of various kinds of low temperature equipments and machineries. For instance, soft solders are always used in constructing liquefiers, heat exchangers and separators of various kinds of gases, as well as storage vessels and experimenting apparatus for liquefied gases. However, one of the main sources of trouble experienced hitherto can be attributed to the leakage of gases through the rupture of soft soldered joints, for it is necessary to keep the inner space in the state of either com-pressed as in the case of a gas liquefier or evacuated to high vacua as that of a wall of Dewar's vessels. It is the object of this study to see how much we can strengthen a soft soldered joint by an addition of some other elements.
