Abstract

A case of leiomyosarcoma of the right maxillary sinus in a 55 year-old female is reported. The patient did not respond to radiotherapy or chemotherapy and subsequently underwent total-left maxillectomy and orbital exenteration.Histological examination of the resected tumor revealed interlacing bundles and whorls of spindle like-shaped cells with blunt-ended nuclei. Electron-microscopically, myofilaments, pinocytotic vesicles, dense plaque and dense bodies, which characterized smooth muscles, were observed. Periodic examination of the patient for 10 months has not disclosed local recurrence or any distant metastasis.
