Abstract

Effect of molecular weight of acrylic polymers on alumina suspension and alumina green sheet was investigated. The polymers used in the present work were butyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymers. Weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of polymers were 2.4, 5.5, 11.0 and 19.1 (×104) respectively. The average diamater of 2 types of alumina particles were 0.6, 2.0μm. The suspensions of alumina particles were well dispersed by using the polymers. In the case of 0.6μm alumina, the suspension prepared by Mw: 2.4×104 polymer was most dispersed, however, cracking happened during the drying process. It was found that the cracking caused by less stress relaxation by oscillatory measurement of suspension. Judging from rheological behavior of suspensions, cracking during drying and properties of green sheets, polymers of more than 10×104Mw were suitable for forming alumina green sheets.
