Abstract

To investigate cooling effect of urban green spaces, meteorological measurements were undertaken at an urban green space (Tanashi Experimental Farm, area: 23.5ha) located at suburban Tokyo Metropolis.By using moving platform (bicycle and motorcycle), distributions of temperature and humidity were measured along a course from the green space to the urban area in summer and winter. For the accurate measurement, the continuously measured data were stored in the data recorder. In most cases, lower temperature in the green space was observed. The temperature decrease in the green space was higher at daytime in summer and at night in winter. From the variation of temperature, the influenced distance was estimated less than 60m.Air and soil temperature, wind velocity and direction were also measured from August to December at fixed measuring points. Difference of daily averaged air temperature between the green space and the urban area was small but decrease of soil temperature in the green space was observed clearly.
