Abstract

In actual application fields to utilize the composite materials for an energy absorption component, it is necessary to take into account the effects of jointing with the other components. Therefore the effects of bolted jointing between composite pipe and steel column on the energy absorption property of composite pipe were evaluated in this study. As the result, composite pipe jointing by eight M8 bolts to steel column exhibited progressive crushing, and energy absorption property of composite pipe bolted joint was almost equal to that of the elemental composite pipe itself. In order to reveal the condition to be exhibited progressive crushing in composite pipe bolted joint, the compression strength of composite and the shear strength of bolt were focused, and two condition equations were proposed. These condition equations were evaluated by using to the experimental results, and it was found that the experimental results were well consistent with the simulation by the proposed equations. Accordingly, it is possible to apply these equations to design of the composite pipes for actual energy abosorber components jointed to the other components by bolts.
