Abstract

After explaining the relationship between the Villa d'Este in Tivoli and the Este family, a historical trace of changes in the garden was made.Though Ippoito d'Este encountered an unlcky situation by the establishment of the villa with its splendid water works and fountains, he and the designer, Ligorio, have created and left us a unique garden of the renaissance.Compared with the upper terraced garden, the lower garden has been largely changed. At present this garden is splendid, but, in the near future, the grove of old cypresses will have fallen, and we should be concerned as to how this part of the garden will be reconstructed.
