Abstract

Histological features of the synovial membrane in eighty one knee and hip joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients were studied. The histological findings were then compared to radiographic changes. Each synovial membrane was classified histologically according to the degree of inflammatory cell infiltration and synovial lining cell proliferation.Radiographic changes in the same joint were evaluated independently using the Larsen system. Results showed that radiographic joint destruction is associated with a sparsity of inflammatory cells and synovial lining cell proliferation.
