Abstract

This article outlines recent advances in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology in China and highlights representative research outcomes of Chinese researchers in the last decade. The author also summarizes the trend of research into nanotechnology worldwide and analyze restrictive factors (and their origins) leading to bottlenecks in the development of nanotechnology in China. The interactions of the following issues may be the main factors restricting the sustainable development of nanotechnology in China: total investment in nanotechnology is relatively low (insufficient), the levels of development in the different subtopics of nanotechnology fields are disproportion, there remains a lack of efficient pathways among innovation chains, no strategic framework has been well established, the research outcomes of original innovation are still few, and the standardization of industrial nanotechnology is lagging. The author also discusses the strategy of nanotechnology development in terms of how to implement the strategy of innovation development, boost independent innovation, encourage cross-disciplinary research, build efficient collaborations among industry- academy-educations, foster nano-industrial sectors, and strengthen international collaborations.
