Abstract
Overall instabilities of locally heated steel frames are processes indicated by snap-through phenomena. A way of analysis of such unstable process has been developed and the resulting solutions have clarified realistically the ultimate states as well as failure modes of steel frames subjected to fire. The ultimate temperature of a frame under fire does not always coincide with the one at which a local failure such as column buckling takes place. The larger restraint capacity of the neighboring members leads to the higher frame ultimate temperature owing to their stress redistribution abilities. Carrying vertical load, a hat truss installed into the top floor adds definitely redundancy to the frame.
