Abstract

Recently, wire, rod and bar prepared by the rolling process are required to have higher quality. Even if there are cracks and scratches on the surface of billets, no defect should remain on the surface of products. Round aluminum bars with five rectangular grooves as artificial defects on the surface were hot-rolled by 3-roll rolling mill. Changes in the depth and shape of the surface grooves during rolling, and effects of rolling conditions on the change of defects were investigated. Depth of grooves decreases on the parts which contact with rolls. One in the parts which don't contact with rolls decreases due to the high longitudinal elongation of material. In the case of flat rolling, the reduction the higher, the depth the smaller. Oval and round roll caliber roll are also effective in reducing the defects.
