Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of fixing treatment on an alginate impression material. The impressions of two original models, a metal block and an acrylic resin block, were taken with an alginate imression material. These impressions were dipped into the fixing solution (1%, 3%, 5% K_2SO_4) and two types of gypsum products, plaster and dental stone were poured into them. The surface of the dies were examined for reproduction of detail, roughness, hardness and aspects of dihydrate crystals. The results were as follows : (1) The surface of plaster with fixing treatment was rougher than without it, while no changes were found for the dental stone die. (2) The surface reproduction was slightly improved by fixing treatment. (3) The surface hardness was hardly changed by fixing treatment. (4) No changes were observed in shape and size of the dihydrate crystals by fixing treatment.
