Abstract

Surveys were conducted on the species composition and the relative abundance of thrips on sugarcane in Amami Oshima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. Thrips were col-lectd from young leaves of sugarcane from May to November in 1988. Total samples consisted of 1324 specimens belonging to 9 species. Stenchaetothrips minutus and Fulmekiola serrata were the predominant species which taken together comprised 99. 1% of the total thrips collected. Although Haplotrips aculeautus is considered as one of the important pests of sugarcane, only a few individuals were collected in this investigation.
