Abstract
The bubble-pick-up tests and the batch flotation tests were carried out and the effects of a series of 1-alkanethiols as collectors on the flotation of galena were investigated. 1-Alkanethiols that belong to soft base group in HSAB principle give a good collection at pH5-9. The results of the flotation tests indicate that 1-alkanethiols with long alkyl chain especially show a marked collecting effect. The amount of collector required for the success of flotation systematically decreases with the increase of number of cabon atoms in alkyl chain of collector from 1-hexanethiol to 1-tetradecanethiol. In the above range an approximately linear relationship exists between the logarithm of the concentration which gives 80% recovery in the flotation and the number of cation atoms in alkyl chain of 1-alkanethiol. The slope of the above line for PbS washed with cyclohexane is compared with that for no-washed one, it has been revealed that the latter is steeper than the former. These results are considered to be related with the state of the adsorption layer of collector. It is possible that the stabilization of energy through association of alkyl chains of 1-alkanethiols contributes to collecting effect when alkyl chains are sufficiently long.
