Abstract

When spot-welded structures are subjected to an external force the load acting on the individual spot weld will not be uniform; it is therefore necessary to determine the life of spot welds by statistical means rather than directly. The distribution pattern of the loads acting on individual spot welds has been determined experimentally, and fatigue tests to obtain the life distribution were then performed using both single and multiple spot welds. Calculations of the fatigue life distribution of multiple spot welds were also made by combining the load distribution characteristics and the fatigue life distribution of a single spot weld. Good agreement was found between the theoretical and empirical fatigue life distributions.
