Abstract

Study on the water wettability of foreign coals, particularly that of those pulverized, is of great importance to botain fundamental characteristics on coal slurries. The authors analyzed the compositions of various types of foreign coals and measured the water wettabilities of Wtheir powders by means of the penetration rate method. The following findings were obtained.1) Whether the water wettability of a fine coal is good or not, it can be estimated from the industrial and chemical analytical values.2) There is a very close, positive correlation between the water wettability of a fine coal and the number of oxygen atoms (per 100 carbon atoms hereinafter the number of atoms of each component represented in the same manner) or the number of water molecules.3) The water wettability of a fine coal has slightly positive correlation with the number of hydrogen atoms, but has slightly negative correlation with the number of nitrogen atoms, sulfur atoms and ash content respectively.
