Abstract

Many reports have been published about spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee, most of which discuss osteonecrosis in the medial femoral condyle and the medial tibial condyle. We recently experienced two cases of spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee, which were seen in the lateral femoral condyle. One had a concomitant torn discoid lateral meniscus and another had a degenerated tear of the lateral meniscus. The etiology of spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee, which is thought to be based on microfractures and weakness of the bone caused by such disorders as osteoporosis, is still unknown. In our cases, the lateral meniscus lesion could be one reason behind the development of osteonecrosis in the lateral femoral condyle.
