Abstract

Concerning SiC whisker reinforced aluminum alloys, the effect of SiC whisker's diameter and the bonding strength at the interface between whiskers and matrix to the mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The results of this study were summarized as follows:1. The effect of larger diameter SiC whisker, which is 1.1μmφ, to the mechanical properties of composite was approximately equal to that of smaller diameter SiC whisker, which is 0.5μmφ.2. Tensile strength of the composite made up of carbon coated SiC whisker obviously declined. So strong bonding at the interface between whisker and matrix was very important to good mechanical properties of the composite.
