Abstract

With the opportunity to attend the annual meeting of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) on August 30, 1990 held at Seattle immediately after the 19th annual meeting of International Society for Experimental Haematology, I could learn about the activities of each national donor bank, some of which, especially of USA much impressed me by their rapid, effective advancements. In this paper, introducing vigorous cooperative activities of American blood centers and volunteer groups, and the brillant results (more than 400 cases of bone marrow transplantation from unrelated donors), it was stressed that Japanese Red Cross blood centers, as already recommended by the related govermental committee of special members, should act a main role to efficiently bring up the Japanese Marrow Donor Bank, which is supposed to settle in public within one year and has uregently been expected by most members of WMDA for not only the Japanese but also the Asian, widely. Finally, some applicable strategies of our blood centers were discussed.
