Abstract

The roentgenogram of the foot of the horse may be quite variable according to the direction, distance, and position of the central ray, together with the specific and complicated structure at the basis of the third phalanx. A preliminary experiment was carried out to study the foot of the horse roentgenologically. In it, a portable x-ray apparatus was employed to evaluate such conditions as exposure, diatance, and radiation center which are required to take roentgenograms from the lateral, dorso-volar, and volardorsal directions. Following results were obtained.1. Excellent roentgenograms of the foot of the horse were obtained by use of an intensifying screen of low speed and a portable x-ray apparatus.2. Condition sfor roentgenograp y of the foot were studied by using the formula roentgenographic energy (E) Voltage3 Current Time= (kilovolts)×(milliamperes)×(seconds) Distance2 (centimeters) with favorable results. The proportion of “E” in the with favorable results. The proportion of “E” in the same foot was to be 1.0 in the lateral projection, 0.6 in the dorso-volar projection, and 0.56 in the volar-dorsal projection.3. In order to avid the unsharpness of the roentgenogram due to the movement of a horse, the time of exposure was made to about 1.0 second. Therefore, a distance of 75 cm wsa adquate.4. In the study of diseases of the third phalanx, the lateral and dorsovolar projection gave a clear description, while the volar-dorsal projection was adequate to study the coffin joint.5. A considerable difference was recogniz in roentgenogram when the radiation center was moved within a range of 10 cm in diameter, The radiation center, therefore, had to be placed at the coronet just behind the second phalanx in the laterzl projection, at the apex of the coronet in the dorso-volar projection, at the end of the frog cleft in the volar-dorsal projection for the convenience of observation.These results indicate that conditions for roentgenography have to be kept constant to study the roentgenogram of the foot of the horse.
