Abstract

Kanazawa Institute of Technology and Komatsu High School, one of Super Science High Schools adopted by MEXT, started a collaborative program so that high school students are able to successfully complete research projects by developing their capabilities of problem discovery, problem solving, scientific report writing, and presentation skills. Students worked on a research project of train noise and obtained the following conclusion from field measurement and theoretical analysis; (1) The measured train noise features decay by distance obtained by assuming the uniform distribution of a source of noise over the length of a train. (2) Sound power of rolling noise of trains features strong directivity perpendicular to the rail.
