Abstract

In this research, we discussed about the effect of pin density and faller spacing on the irregularity of the sliver. Fallers with various pin densities were used and withdrawing test of a wool sliver was carried out for various faller spacing. The obtained results from the experiments such as withdrawal force, weight of the out-of-turn withdrawn fibers and its standard deviation were investigated from the standpoint of contact area between the faller pins and fibers as well as the bundle packing density in the pin zone. When the pin density of fallers increases, the contact area between the faller pins and fibers almost linearly increases but, the bundle packing density in the pin zone increases at range of 8 to 16 pin/in of fallers and then decreases at 20 pin/in of fallers. As the contact area between the faller pins and fibers increases, the withdrawal force increases and the weight of the out-of-turn withdrawn fibers as well as its standard deviation decrease. From this result, we concluded that the irregularity of the sliver decreases when the contact area and bundle density increases. And we also concluded that the contact area and bundle density are two effective parameters for investigating the role of faller in gill-box.
