Abstract
The process planning method by information concept based on the newly proposed axiom is presented to select optimum machine tools. Conventional methods of process planning can not optimize the process with respect to plural number of evaluation items inclusively and reasonably. But this method can select optimum machine tools with respect to cost, scheduling, dimensional accuracy, surface roughness and so on by integration of information for these items. This method was applied to manufacturing of short shafts in the factory of Waseda University and its propriety was investigated. Dimensional accuracy, surface roughness and cost are selected as the evaluation items. Four sets of machine tools are chosen to manufacture the parts. The specifications about the first two items are satisfied for all the parts manufactured by the four sets of machine tools. The total manufacturing time for each set of machine tools was measured and is compared. This comparison shows good accordance between the order of the appropriateness which was forecasted by this method and the order of the total manufacturing time for each set, and shows propriety of this method.
