Abstract

A 59 year old male first noticed black macules at the bottom of right foot in June, 1997. At the initial visit to this dermatology department on Nov 26, 1997 he was found to have a finger-tip sized, rnildly elevated and elastic firm brown nodule in the mid portion of right sole. The nodule was surrounded by several bean sized black nodules. Diagnosis of malignant melanoma was then confirmed. In mid December the patient received wide resection with skin graft and excision of right inguinal lymph nodes. Three times of DAV+IFN were performed. In August, 1999 metastases appeared at the right sole, right leg and the scar area of right groin. After taking the 4th treatment of DAVE-IFN, 5-S-CD level was up to 14.5 nmol/l, lst trial of DACTam was given. In February, 5black macules were found in the inner aspect of right thigh which were prove to be metastases. Ten dose of IFN-β, each containing 3 million units, were given sequentially through local injection. The lesion of cancer metastasis gradually shrinked and disappeared.Tissue biopsy showed cancer cells degenerated with apoptosis, by the methods of TUNEL, and immunohistochemical staining of p53, FAS and Bcl-2. No sign of recurrence was noted 7 months after the last treatment. [Skin Cancer(Japan) 2001; 16: 174-178]
