Abstract

Fe nanoparticles were prepared by DC arc plasma method under Ar, Ar-25%H2, Ar-50%H2, Ar-75%H2 and H2 flow. The diameter of arc plasma decreased significantly with increasing H2 mixing ratio, which was due to hydrogen induced thermal pinch effect. The generation rate of the Fe nanoparticles was significantly enhanced with the pinched arc plasmas. The numerical simulation with taking into consideration of Fe vaporization was carried out, and it was indicated that the arc temperature drastically increased due to the thermal pinch effect, and thereby Fe anode was efficiently heated, leading to the enhancement of Fe vaporization. Thus, the thermal pinch effect plays an important role on the generation rate of metallic nanoparticles in Ar-H2 arc plasma method.
