Abstract

This paper describes the process and its concept, history and present status of development of hot coal gas desulfurization process for Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle Power Generation (IGCC) system. The development is under way sponsored by the ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) formerly as a part of “Sunshine” project. The process consists of a sulfur absorber and a sorbent regenerator both of which are two stage fluidized bed and uses iron oxide as a sorbent. Since the fluidized bed system operates with continuously circurating sorbent, and has uniform temperature through out the each bed, stable continuous operation, good control of temperature of reactor and stable continuous heat recovery can be achieved. The development is at a stage of operation of pilot plant treating coal gas from 40tons (coal) /day fluidized bed coal gasifier. A larger plant as a part of 200tons (coal) /day IGCC pilot plant is under construction.
