Abstract

The pneumatic capsule pipeline system is a new transportation system. But the available design data of the system are not enough, particularly in the case of high speed capsule transportation. In this study, the unsteady running characteristics of the pneumatic capsule was made clear from this theoretical and experimental investigations. Calculations were carried out using the Method of Characteristics. and the exnerimental studies were pertormed using the test pipeline of 20mm diameter and 25m length. The results obtained are summerized as follows;1) The effects of the change of state (adiabatic or isothermal) of air on the calculated results are little.2) The change of the tank pressure: capsule weight and the clearance affect considerably the capsule motion, and the calculated results agree well with the experiments. As the clearance between the pipe and the capsule becomes larger. the difference of pressure at the rear and the front of capsule becomes smaller because of the leakage flow. Therefore the capsule velocity becomes smaller than that of the tight system.3) Furthermore, for the continuous transportation of capsules, the running characteristics are made clear in the theoretical analyses. In this case, the existence of the clearance results in the smooth motion of each capsules. On the other hand, in the tight system, the capsule motion is irregular very much, because the pressure change along the pipeline is veryl arge. Moreover, in the case of the existence of clearance, the steady transportation condition is reached faster than that of the tight system.
