Abstract

Response properties of piezoelectric AE sensors (PZT) on CFRP laminate were evaluated by using simulate AE source. Sensitivity properties and frequency responses of the sensor for both quasi-longitudinal wave (QL) and quasi-transverse wave (QT) from pencil lead breaking source were analyzed as a function of the fiber orientation and detection direction of the sensor. The sensitivity of piezoelectric sensor were controlled by 1) the main displacement direction of QL and QT, 2) transmission ratio between fibers and/or matrix and PZT, 3) polling direction of the piezoelectric device and 4) piezoelectric constants. When the sensor mounted at the side of the plate transverse to the fiber orientation, QL could detect with high sensitivity. Its condition will be carried out high resolution source location. While, when the sensor mounted on the plate surface, QL could detect with high sensitivity. The frequency response of the sensor depended on 1) acoustic impedance matching between the fibers and/or the matrix and the PZT, 2) resonant frequency of structural dispersion in the plate and 3) resonant frequency of material dispersion in the plate.
