Abstract

A puppy suffered from dilatation of the esophagus which had followed stenosis of the organ. Surgical operation disclosed that the stenosis had been induced by abnormality in the process of development of the aortic arch daring fetal life. These conditions were reproduced in two experimental dogs by artificial stricture of the thoracic portion of the esophagus. Two months' observation revealed that the two dogs manifested clinical signs well identical with those of the puppy. In one of the two dogs, the stricture as removed after two months, which resulted in improvement of the clinical signs.Judging from the results of surgical operation on the puppy and those obtained from the experimental dogs, it may be better to perform any operation to restore the site of stenosis or remove any cause of stricture at first and, if necessary, to treat the dilatation of the esophagus after confirmation of the results of the first operation.
