Abstract

This paper describes a technique of building up a 3D sheet structure using electrostatic actuators that can directly actuate dielectric sheets, such as paper sheets and plastic sheets. The technique is expected to be utilized in Origami robotics, where sheets are automatically built up into robots, or interactive media using paper sheets. This particular work evaluates building-up of partly-incised A4-sized sheets. By opening the incise using the electrostatic actuators, the unincised part of the sheet is raised to build up a simple 3D structure. The process of the building-up is reported using sequences of photos. In addition, the minimum operation voltages required for building-up was evaluated for different incision lengths.
