Abstract

In relation to the fact that emulsion fuels have a remarkable effect on the reduction of exhaust gas and on saving energy in diesel engine and boiler, the effects of emulsion fuels on soot formation in the combustion of fuel droplets are investigated. The experimental results are summarized as follows:(1) In the combustion of water/oil emulsion fuels, mini-explosion phenomena are observed. It has the advantage of exposing more fuel to the air, therefore the burning velocity is more rapidly than that of the original fuel.(2) But the more we add water to the fuel, the more the droplet temperature in combustion goes down and ignition delay increases.(3) Emulsion fuel-droplets have a remarkable effect on reduction of looting ratio. The swarm of soot particles is smaller in proportion to add water in emulsion fuel.(4) The size distribution of soot particles and the size of crystallites in a single soot particle are affected by the combustion of the emulsion fuel-droplets.These experimental results suggest that, in the combustion of emulsion fuels, not only are water in emulsion fuel effective on soot formation by abrupt physical phenomena (mini-explosion), but has influence on chemical reaction.
