Abstract

This study used the data of tropical Cyclone Yearbook from 1949 to 2010 to analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of tropical cyclones in Western North Pacific during its formation. The relationship between the formation area and the maximum intensity was also under examination. The results indicated that the number of TCs formed in WNP showed a decreasing trend. The total number of the TCs formed in recent 10 years was a minimum for a 10-year average. The active phases for TC formation on the South China Sea (Western North Pacific) were from June to September (July to October). The results also showed that the formation areas of TCs experienced a seasonal oscillation and had a strong relation with the intensity.
