Abstract
A castrated hybrid pig about 5 months old weighing about 60 kg became thin, retarded in growth. Autopsy revealed abscess formation in the lungs, kidneys, and bronchial and submaxillary lymph nodes, cloudy swelling of the liver and kidneys, splenomegaly, obscurity of follicles in the spleen, and swelling of lymph nodes. Histological changes observed were suppurative catarrhal bronchitis and exudation containing abundant alveolar epithelial cells, polymorphocytes and lymphocytes in alveli. Cells of the reticuloendothelial system proliferated in the liver and spleen. Proliferation of polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cells and focal necrosis were also found in the liver. The kidneys were infiltrated with inflammatory cells and contained some abscesses with necrosis and proliferation of polymorphocytes. Lesions were absent in the brain.Salmonella typhi-suiswas isolated from four abscesses, which were in the lung, kidney, and bronchial and submaxillary lymph nodes, and lungs, organs, such as liver, spleen, kidneys, and superficial subinguinal, subiliac, internal iliac, popliteal and mesenteric lymph nodes.
