Abstract

The statistical concept of the compound nucleus model was expanded to successive emission of three particles after compound nucleus formation. Application to (n, 3n) reactions leads to a cross-section formula which corresponds to the well-known Weisskopf formula for (n, 2n) cross sections. Experimental (n, 3n) cross sections were determined for some odd-proton target nuclei in the mass region 100 < A < 150 for neutrons between 18.2 and 19.5 MeV and compared with the prediction of the statistical model.
