Abstract

As parasites of the common pike, Esox lucius Linn., Kudo (1920: 29) lists five species of the genus Henneguya (H. psorospermica, H. oviperda, H. lobosa, H. peri-intestinalis, H. schizura), one species of the genus Myxobolus (M. anurus), and one species of the genus Myxidium (M. lieberkiihni). Studies on the same host fish in the United States and Canada have shown only the form Myxidium lieberkiihni Biitschli present. This has been especially noted by Mavor (1916a, 1916b). Gurley (1893) reported that Miiller failed to find any infections of Henneguya schizura (Gurley) Labbe in the pike he examined in the United States, while Kudo (1934: 11) notes two pike from Illinois waters negative for any myxosporidian infection. In the summer of 1937 the writer examined 27 E. lucius from various waters of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with negative results. The only other reports of myxosporidian infections of Esox spp. were noted by Kudo (1918) when he showed three Esox spp. from the Woods Hole area to be negative and again (Kudo, 1921) when he reported Myxidium lieberkiihni in 13 of 13 Esox reticulatus (probably E. niger Le Sueur) of New York State and also described Wardia lucii from 2 of the 13 fish.
