Abstract

This essay focuses upon the use of mythic images to create a transcendent vision of order. The efforts of a leading Irish speaker are analyzed as he argued against legislative union with Great Britain in 1800. Facing a certain loss in the debates and the extinction of the Irish state, Henry Grattan built a foundation for future nationalism. He offered a mythic interpretation of the debates and suggested a future rebirth of Ireland by emphasizing the enduring strengths of the Irish Constitution, the Irish Nation, and the Irish Spirit.
