Abstract

After an introduced insect pest becomes established in a new area, the first line of defense often employed is to introduce natural enemies from the area of endemism of that pest. This strategy, termed classical biological control , can provide substantial levels of cost-effective control (van den Bosch et al. 1985). Classical biological control of insects frequently has emphasized the introduction of parasitoids and predators, although pathogens have also been used, but to a more limited extent (Fuxa 1987).
