Abstract

Abstract Today, Mértola (Myrtilis Iulia) is a small village located on the right bank of the Guadiana river in southeastern Portugal. In Roman times, Myrtilis Iulia was a noteworthy port city, the last harbor before the Guadiana reached the sea. Products from the south of the Roman province of Lusitania (wheat, wine, olive oil), metals from the western Iberian pyrite belt, and varied products arriving from the Roman Empire passed through Myrtilis Iulia. During Classical times and in Late Antiquity Myrtilis Iulia played an important economic and cultural role at the junction between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Traces of Roman and Late Antique architecture (houses, harbor facilities, epigraphic tombstones, basilicas, baptisteries, mausoleum), sculpture, mosaics, ceramics, and coins can still be found together with a substantial Islamic presence (houses, mosque, pottery).
